On July 13, Quincy Jones will celebrate his 85th birthday on the stage of Umbria Jazz and will start the series of concerts at the Arena di Santa Giuliana. He started at 14, won 28 Grammy and is one of only 15 artists to receive the Grammy Legend Award. Not to mention the honorary degrees and the masters of prestigious universities.
Protagonist of many summer editions, twice with Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil returns to Umbria Jazz, on July 14th, to commemorate and celebrate, one of his most beautiful and emotionally engaging projects, a record that he recorded in 1977 after having participated in the African music festival in Lagos, Nigeria. The title is Refavela 40.
On July 15th, Stefano Bollani brings UJ his album "Que Bom", dedicated to Brasilian music, expressing his carioca passions.
On July 16th they will be on the stage of the Santa Guliana Arena, the Massive Attack, whose concert will see the British Fathers band as the opening act.
The Chainsmokers arrive in Perugia The duo of records that dominated all the international charts in 2017, winner of the last edition of the Grammy as Best New Artist, will rise on the stage of Umbria Jazz on July 17 for a single summer date.
On the Arena stage, July 18, Somi arrives with his music New African Jazz, which bridges the African roots and the American jazz and soul scene. It has been seen as a Miriam Makeba of our days and artistically has also been approached by Dianne Reeves, Nina Simone and Dee Dee Bridgewater.
After one year, Pat Metheny will return to Umbria on July 19th. The great Kansas City guitarist will be preceded on the stage of the Arena Santa Giuliana by the quintet of Kyle Eastwood, son of the actor Clint Eastwood.
On July 20, David Byrne, founder in 1974 of Talking Heads together with Os Mutantes, Brazil "Alternative" with this multi-faceted band and their "mutant" music, will be on stage.
On 21 July there will be the return of Mario Biondi, one of the favorites of the Umbria Jazz public who has always welcomed him, with great warmth.
Biondi has often taken the stage of the Santa Giuliana arena, and always in good company. This year by his side Nick West and the Hypnotic Brass Band.
Gregory Porter with his tribute to Nat King Cole and the Umbria Jazz Orchestra, directed by Vince Mendoza, close the main stage of UJ18, Sunday, July 22nd.
